India [Nov. 18th, 2008|01:11 am]
So, I thought I would blog a little about my experience so far here in Bangalore.  I am going to do it in blurb style for those with ADD.

Things I've done here that I thought i would never do:

Eaten off a street vendor cart- It was some very delicious pineapple
Eaten food that made my mouth hurt and nose run and kind of liked it
Went to a bar that was dirtier than the old Busters

Other thoughts about my experience:

We met this Indian guy, Allan, in a bar that really liked Bush.  He then asked us why we didn't like Bush.  We gave him the standard War in Iraq answer along with disagreements about his policies.  He and his friend then said they really liked Clinton and said, "If Clinton were president during 9/11, then they would have never heard from Osama again." They apparently thought Clinton was way more aggressive than Clinton.  It was so interesting to see a different view on American politics.  Everyone here asks us about OBama.  They are sort of excited, yet anxious about him.

There are so many kinds of Indian food.  Northern is my favorite so far.  It has lots of rice.  Southern uses wheats and breads.  I do forget to order things boneless here so I've stuck to eating vegetarian meals.  Being a vegetarian here is awesome, there is an abundance of choices anywhere.  Kind of nice.

Admittedly,  I was hestitant about the "sexism" here in India.  I've found that although women are objects in various ways here, they are also respected.  Men here don't touch women much in public and generally move out of their way unless they are with them.  The younger men here are more brazen and make a weird kissy nose.  This is like our whistling, I think.  Also, men hold hands with other men all the time here.  I don't think it's homosexual.  It's just an extreme comfort level.  Women are like this with other women as well.

We eat out a bit since we are in a hotel.  The service here is beyond belief.  Generally, they plate your food as most food is communal. They pour your water.  We always drink from bottled water so we don't get sick.  They also sometimes stare at you while you eat just in case you may need something.

Amid the crazy traffic and dirty street, there is a giant park.  It was so beautiful with the exception of the trash.  There is  total lack of trash cans around bangalore. The park has huge trees and open spaces for picnics and is generally crowded.

The beggars are perhaps the hardest part about being here.  They are kids, elderly people, disabled people, and middle age people. The children are the worst.  It tears at my heart alttle.  Isiah, the guy traveling with us,  offered a beggar food but he only wanted money.  Some people here beg for a living others simply live on the street and do it to survive.  I can't even paint an accurate picture with words to describe how heartbreaking some of these beggars are.

On a funny note, there is a guy near our hotel who does Yoga and sings bollywood songs on his roof.  This happens periodically throughout the day.  I'm used to it now.

Television here sucks.  American shows are about two seasons behind and most channels are bollywood and soap operas.  It gets old after a while, trust me.  I do get to see alot of seinfeld and friends reruns though.   Also, they cut the sex out of movies and shows.  Female nudity is not seen, while males often show a good amount of skin. Not penis, but butt.

I probably have more to write but I'm losing power on the laptop.

Palin [Oct. 6th, 2008|06:09 pm]
Okay so I don't write entries that are not fluffy, but I just had to talk about this quote:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S03ZfFf_gGQ
link to article
The statement came after Palin had recounted a "providential" moment she experienced on Saturday: "I'm reading on my Starbucks mocha cup, okay? The quote of the day... It was Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State [crowd boos] and UN ambassador. ... Now she said it, I didn't. She said, 'There's a place in Hell reserved for women who don't support other women.'"
Palin seemed to realize that the line could be viewed as grating. As the audience cheered, she remarked:

"Okay, now, thank you so much for receiving that well. I didn't know how that was gonna go over. And now, California, let's see what a comment like I just made, how that is turned into whatever it'll be turned into tomorrow with the newspaper."

Now, I have never been a republican supporter but I do respect McCain.  In fact, I almost decided to vote for him after Hillary lost the primary.  I will never understand though why he picked Palin as a running mate.  As an educated woman who is/was an undecided voter, a woman as his VP could have been gold to me.  I would used that as yet another reason to cross the line into voting for McCain.  However, this woman is abrasive.  I will not be goated into voting for someone because if I don't support her, I don't support women.  I do support women.  I support strong, education women who have leadership skills and know about the issues without a bootcamp.  I support women who help other women. I support women who want to better the lives of women through progress.  Having Sarah Palin as a VP would be an embarrassment to our country.  Palin couldn't handle Katie Couric, let alone leaders of others countries.  This quote is a betrayal to all strong and independent women.  If you vote for Palin/McCain, do so because you want to, not because you feel like you have to because she's a woman.

As for the second part of the quote, the quote will be turned into what it is, a quote.  How desperate can that campaign be that they need to blame the media for their failures.  This by the way is a classic republican technique.  If we want change, like BOTH campaigns promise shouldn't we start with actually changing the way we campaign.

What: My birthday dinner
When: 9/12/07 7:00 pm
Where: Carraba's

So due to the massive amount of things going on in my world and other things, I can only do a birthday dinner this year. I'm cool with that though. If you can't make it, I will understand. You do owe me a sexy dance complete with humping later though.

Interesting things:
My last project for the semester is done on wednesday !
Heroes is new tonight. (does dance)
I'm going to see "Knocked up" with two of my favorite people on Wednesday For FREE
I will finally be able to work more than 20 hours a week for a while (yay money)
The church for the wedding is reserved
Veronica Mars is new on Tuesday! ( does dorky tv dance)

Corey's birthday
Summer school (yuck)

Needless to say, I'm quite happy and content right now.

I originally intended to write something about the Virginia tech guy that was insightful.  I don't really have an insightful comment though. I feel kind of disconnected from the whole thing.  I know it was  a tradegy.  Sometimes, for me, it's hard to stop living my own life to reflect on things like that.  I wish that I could form some thoughts or tears.  That guy was really messed up.  Something in his life was wrong.  I know that people saw him unraveling.  As a teacher, I fear incidents like that.  Here at UK, I feel safe, or as safe as possible.  But, it could happen anywhere.  I hope that whatever happened to that guy in his life is found and maybe we can save others who may feel or act the same.  Maybe this incident will spark change in the mental health community and services. I am hopeful that change is possible.

So, I thought I might review my life since thanksgiving ( the last time I really posted anything) but no.  It's too long.  Christmas came.  I got presents.  Pot luck rocked.  New Years Rocked.  School started.
Corey and I have been doing this "healthy eating" thing.  Corey iniated the idea but I think support in these cases is necessary.  We do eat every meal together.  Plus,  there's nothing wrong with being a little more health concious.  We're both doing pretty well. The hardest thing is to make better choices at resturants, which why eating at home is more of my style.  I made some yummy low-fat quesdillas yesterday.   Corey is just sticking to subway.
Classes are going well, this being the second day.   I feel so busy though.  Thankfully, this is my next to last semester.  All the same people in my classes, which is comforting.  I like knowing people even if it feels abit like high school.
Corey and I went to a mass on sunday at St. Peters.  The church is old and nice.  The Priest was really quirky too.   It's defiently better than Christ the King.  This sunday we'll be visiting St. Paul.  Both are old and in the downtown area, near the Lafayette club.   This way guests can walk from the church or drive a short distance to the reception.

Speaking of wedding things, Corey and I were talking about Honeymoons.  Has anyone taken a week long cruise? I kind of want to know what is involved like activities and such.

Okay, so here's my very  geeky entry. I spent the last three days watching season 2 of Veronica Mars.  It was awesome.  Let's just leave it at that.  However, watching the newest episode tonight, I couldn't help but feel differently about Logan and Veronica's relationship.  Having seen it offically come full circle, it wasn't as fun and airy as watching before and having no backstory whatso ever except for Angela.

random story [Sep. 20th, 2006|10:41 am]
So, in my reading and literature class, my teacher had to bring her son because he was sick. For an hour and a half, he watched us color, make books, and talk about personal narratives. The funniest part of the class came when his mother attempted to read one of his personal narratives as an example of children's work. He turned completely red and whined "No, MOM." So, she didn't read it. One of the three guys in our class told him, "It's okay. We can talk about it over coffee at Starbucks." The kid replied, "I don't like coffee." The guy then said, "But it's expensive coffee." haha. The kid and the guy giggled.

Hello everyone!!

This weekend I will be celebrating my 24th birthday again, just kidding I'll be 25. I wanted to be able to hang out with everyone so I designed a weekend of events in which you can spend time with me.... or whatever. As most of you know, I love my birthday. I even take off work on that day. Friday, I want to have dinner at Carraba's. Yum.... probably around 7ish since I have to work till 6:30. Then a movie. Most likely, little miss sunshine at the the kentucky or lexington green. Saturday, Bar hopping will occur. I haven't picked any out and am open for suggestions. If you hate some place, let me know. I would tell you all. (coughs)pool halls with dirty bathrooms. I was considering and hoping for a nice mode of transportation for the night, but costs could be high. I would then like to cab it. If you don't want to, I understand. I do like the idea of people being able to drink if they want and not having to worry about a d.d.. You hos better drink with me.....

It's okay if you don't feel like doing any of this with me. I understand and still love you.

So.. I thought it was time to update on my life as it seems others are. I am kind of excited about going back to school. I kind of like being busy. I really like my new living situation. I loved my old one too, though. It's weird to hear silence. I do kind of wish I still heard Jason and Corey battling away in the next room at Diablo.
Friends are good. I love you all. I know that some of you are going through changes such as school and work and even... marriage. I admire you all for your own strengths. I'm trying to be there for all of you, as I feel that all of you would be there for me if I needed it. If you ever need to talk or just sit, I'm very good at just sitting, and veg, feel free to come over.
I miss my Tony. I hope he has fun in France.
